Celebrating Organic Farming this World Cotton Day

Celebrating Organic Farming this World Cotton Day

Today, October 7 is World Cotton Day and we are taking a moment to recognise the people behind one of our favourite natural fibres! World Cotton Day was initiated 3 years ago and looks at sustainable farming of cotton to help improve the lives of cotton workers, such as labourers and smallholders and their families.

Cotton is a culture, a way of life, and a tradition with its roots at the heart of human civilization. Cotton touches us every day, it is a source of livelihoods for millions of smallholder farmers and labourers, including women and their families, and contributes significantly to the economies of many developing countries.

...as more people become aware of and concerned about the effect of human activities on the environment and their health, the demand for organic cotton is growing fast and helping prevent a much greater cost to our planet, Earth.

Organic and regenerative cotton is the primary fibre used in our collections as we have recognised the multiple virtues of this natural fibre when grown without toxic chemicals for people and our planet.

For us, World Cotton Day also celebrates the incredible work that goes into organic farming - not an easy task in anyone’s book. This farming method works with natural systems to protect biodiversity, promote ecological balance and prevent overexploitation of natural resources. It also prevents the usage and consumption of harmful chemicals such as pesticides and fertilisers that leach into the soil and run into our waterways, making it safer and healthier overall.

Naturally organic cotton is more expensive than non-organic because of the high labour and production costs and lower yields due to dependency on rainfall. However, as more people become aware of and concerned about the effect of human activities on the environment and their health, the demand for organic cotton is growing fast and helping prevent a much greater cost to our planet, Earth.
